Alteration Tips

Costumes

When doing alterations, remember that well made garments can be recycled from show to show. Try not to cut that beautiful dress or tailored skirt. If possible, hem (even duct tape) when altering costumes. You will be glad you did when you need that costume for the next production.

If making handmade costumes, use easy-to-sew patterns which have fewer pieces and simple directions. Because small machine stitches are hard to remove, use a medium stitch. Make all skirts with waistband extensions and hem allowance. Use the right thread! For best results choose a thread compatible to the fabric you are sewing. Thread is available by size number (the higher the number, the finer the thread) and by size letter (A is fine, D is heavy). See chart below.

Type of Thread Weight and Size Usage
CottonMedium (size 50) Light, medium weight cottons, rayons, linens. Not knits or stretchy fabrics.
Silk Fine (size A) Silk, wool, basting all fabric types, knit
Nylon Fine (size A) Light to medium synthetics
Polyester All purpose weight Most fabrics. Woven synthetics, knits, stretchy fabrics
polyester All purpose weight Knits, woven synthetic blends
Heavy Duty Coarse thread Heavy vinyl, coating, upholstery fabrics

My playground was the theatre. I'd sit and watch my mother pretend for a living. As a young girl, that's pretty seductive.
